Gareth Davies – Managing Director of KSDL

Gareth started his career as a Sales and Marketing Graduate at Scottish & Newcastle Brewers, before becoming Senior Brand Manager for Old Speckled Hen.

In 1997 Gareth moved into the Sport and Leisure industry where he has spent the last 20 years. During this time Gareth has held the following positions:

  • Head of Sports Marketing for Reebok UK: In this role Gareth oversaw contracts ranging from Liverpool F.C. and Ryan Giggs, to the Welsh Rugby Union and U.K. Athletics.
  • CEO of Bradford Bulls Rugby League Club: Here, Gareth oversaw the clubs victories in the Super League Grand Final and the World Club Championship.
  • M.D of the Scarlets Rugby Union Club: Gareth helped to manage the build and oversaw the transition into the new 15,000 seat stadium - Parc y Scarlets.

Now Managing Director of KSDL, at The John Smith’s Stadium, Gareth oversees what is already a fascinating mixed sport and leisure business and is planning a further major leisure development - The HD One!

Philip Armitage - Operations Manager

Phil started his working life at sea with the Merchant Navy. Having spent 9 years working on oil tankers, he then became a Life Guard for Leeds City Council, working at The International Pool.

Due to his engineering experience gained on the oil tankers, he became Plant Engineer with Kirklees Leisure Services.

In July 1994, Phil was appointed Senior Engineer for the Stadium, working alongside Brian Buckley, who was then Stadium Manager. He was responsible for all Mechanical and Electrical aspects of the running of the Stadium. At the time he joined, there was just two stands completed. He oversaw the fit out of the South Stand which was completed in the following year, and then of course the North Stand which followed in 1998.

Following the retirement of Brian in 2006, Phil took over his role and became Operations Manager. He is currently responsible for the Buildings, Plant, Machinery, Pitch, Utilities, Communications, Landscaping and Car Parks. He is also the Stadium’s Safety Certificate Holder.

Jayne Armitage - HR and Events Manager

After leaving School Jayne joined a company of Chartered Accountants as an Office Junior, where she stayed for 3 years.

In 1984, she joined Tesco as a Secretary in one of their regional Personnel and Training Departments, working her way through the ranks to become Office Manager. Unfortunately her career with Tesco was cut short when they closed their Regional Offices and she was made redundant in 1994.

In May 1994, she became the first person on the KSDL payroll. KSDL was a newly formed Company whose remit was to manage and operate the then named The Alfred McAlpine Stadium. She was Secretary/PA to George Binns, the Stadium Administrator. Over a number of years she worked closely with George, eventually taking over his role when he retired in 2006.

She is currently responsible for Events and HR matters for our 250+ full and part time employees. Her role as Event Manager encompasses all match and event arrangements from a public safety point of view.

Rachael Cocker - Finance Manager

Rachael started her career in Finance at a local Builders Merchant, which just happened to be within sight of the Stadium.  From the window of her office, she could see the huge banana trusses and the colossal amount of steelwork, being delivered to the building site, never thinking that one day she would work there.

In August 1994, just before the Stadium opened, Rachael joined KSDL as their Finance Assistant, working for the Finance Manager, Graham Sykes.  When Graham retired in June 2012, Rachael was promoted to Finance Manager.

She is currently responsible for all financial aspects involved in the running of the Stadium, including producing monthly accounts, budget forecasts and payrolls for 250+ full and part time staff.

John Robinson – Safety Officer

As Safety Officer, it is my responsibility to plan, organise and manage match-day events at the stadium involving Huddersfield Town AFC and Huddersfield Giants RLFC as required.  Qualified to NVQ Level 4 in Spectator Safety I have been employed by KSDL for 14 years after retiring from West Yorkshire Police.   I have also worked with the Football League to develop the “On the Ball” training package and have also acted as Safety Officer at Leigh Sports Village, Headingley Stadium and the Tour de France when it visited Yorkshire.

A married man I enjoy motor-cycle racing and support Barnsley FC.

Tim Dale – Deputy Safety Officer, Security Manager and

Health & Safety Manager

Tim commenced in his current role with the Stadium in 2013, although was a match day steward for several years before that. Tim brings with him 33 years experience with west Yorkshire Police and as Deputy Safety Officer and qualified to NVQ Level 4 in Spectator Safety Management he stands in for the ‘Safety Officer’ as necessary for football matches and plans and runs the safety operation for Huddersfield Giants matches. During the ‘normal’ working week he is responsible for the security of the Stadium site and the health & safety of the Stadium operation and its staff, quite a challenge.

Claire Leader - Secretary/Receptionist

I have been working full time for KSDL for the past two years although I actually started working for the company in 1994.  Starting as a match day Steward, I then became a Supervisor running first a stand and then the Response team and for the last few years I have been working as a CCTV operator on match days.  Monday to Friday my role is also varied, I work as Secretary and Receptionist and I also do some work in our accounts office.

Outside of work I have a second job in a local brewery tap and like travelling and writing letters.

Anna Young - Secretary/Receptionist

I started work at the Stadium 15 Years ago as a Receptionist, during this time I have seen many changes.

My work involves a lot of varied Administration Work as well as liaising with the general public and Stadium Tours. I also work as a Courtesy Steward on match days when not working on reception which involves meeting and greeting people and helping them with any information they may require.

I am a friendly honest and reliable person with a good sense of humour.

I have a son, twin daughters, five grandchildren … time for hobbies! !
